Quantity

Quantity is one of the first math concepts your child will show that they understand. Connecting numbers with the quantity they represent is an important skill used all through life. This concept is important for young children to learn in order to succeed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in the future.

Children learn and retain more when they use more than one sense in the learning process. They need to experience concepts physically to really understand them, even with math. Counting in a variety of ways, using rhymes and movement helps your child make their counting and number skills stronger.

Play “Count the claps”, which involves the senses of hearing and sight, as well as movement. You clap your hands a certain number of times (without counting out loud) and then your child claps the same number of claps while counting them out loud. Start with smaller numbers and work into larger numbers when your child is ready. You can also clap to a certain beat or rhythm.
